I got my first glimpse of the Hollywood sign today. I was driving back from a friend's house in Silver Lake and it seemed to suddenly spring out ahead of me. It was waaaaay off in the distance but unmistakable.
It was a nice moment. I've been here two months and wondered when I'd happen across the famous landmark (obviously I couldn't be arse to actually go to IT). Then I saw the observatory which is close by. I do love a good observatory. Get a good light show going in the planetarium, a bit of Morgan Freeman voice-over and that is my idea of heaven, well celestial anyway.
LA is definitely not a city for tourists because there aren't enough places of interest but there are a few things worth seeing if you happen to be passing through.

ReplyDeleteYou know, it's funny you say that because I keep being drawn back to the place (even without a hire car - so far) and not because I am desperate to see Famous Faces... so there MUST be something that appeals to the explorer in me and other people.
A little funny that you haven't seen the Hollywood sign before - obviously been gripping the wheel and staring straight ahead.
Tourist suggestion #214: go to a really nice example of Frank Lloyd Wright - the Hollyhock House. Happens to be hear a vaguely trendy area if I remember rightly.
The world is a little disappointed that your interesting restaurant reviews are not happening on a daily basis - can't you think of this as your Diary, and post daily? Even if only to say "went to Restaurant X today, which was cr*p... discovered Hershey Kisses, which were ok, if too sugary".
By the way, your writing style is really good, you shouuld consider adding some journo work to your bow.
Cheers
