I really am going back to school. Actors classes are probably a self-perpetuating business with agents, producers and casting directors expecting all actors to be in class (preferably their reasonably priced program payable in 4 easy installments) but at the end of the day, when in Rome..... (unless the Roman you're copying is a priest. In which case, do the opposite).
I'm now in an improv class at the Upright Citizens Bureau. Though it sounds like a forgotten department of the KGB, its actually a well-respected and established comedy school and venue. They're well known for sketch, improv and stand up and list Amy Pohler as one of their founders.
Yesterday was class one and apart from the seemingly eternal search for parking beforehand, it was a fun class. You could tell our teacher had taught it many times over to many students making the same mistakes, having the same breakthroughs, asking the same questions. There'd always be the guy who made inappropriate sexual references, the unfunny bitter lady, the self-appointed class clown, the cool guy, the quirky girl and many other colourful archetypes but through all our improvised fumbling around like a teenage boy unfastening his first bra, our teacher remained professional and importantly positive. We have a showcase in four weeks time. He said, don't worry, you'll be fine...
